New Book Honors Groundbreaking Work of Martin E. P. Seligman

Templeton Foundation Press’s new book, The Science of Optimism and Hope: Research Essays in Honor of Martin E. P. Seligman, brings together the latest research of over 30 contributors whose work has been greatly influenced by his innovative approach.

Seligman describes the impact of this work:

“I want to suggest to you that there is a set of human strengths that are the great buffers against mental illness: optimism, hope, courage, interpersonal skill, loving-kindness, work ethic, responsibility, faith, future-mindedness, honesty, and perseverance just to name a few.  I want to suggest to you that the positive psychology, the positive social science that I envision for the twenty-first century, will therefore have the useful side effect of the prevention of much of mental illness.  But more importantly it will have the direct effect of creating a scientific understanding and a profession concerned with the practice of civic virtue and the pursuit of the best things in life.”

Understanding Wisdom Published

As part of the John Templeton Foundation’s initiative to support scientific research on wisdom and the “laws of life,” the Press has just published a major body of work entitled Understanding Wisdom: Sources, Science, and Society.

Edited by Warren S. Brown, director of the Travis Institute for Biopsychological Research and professor of psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary, Understanding Wisdom features contributions from an eminent group of scholars in fields as diverse as theology, philosophy, medicine, biology, psychology, and linguistics.  The book focuses on wisdom from three perspectives: the preservation and propagation of wisdom through literature, the science of wisdom (including mental and brain processes), and the learning of wisdom.

Understanding Wisdom brings focus to this understudied area of research and points out the final challenge: to discern those goals that are truly worth seeking.

Recent Reviews on the Power of Prayer around the World

The Power of Prayer around the World:

By Glenn Mosley and Joanna Hill

“There are as many different ways to pray as there are faiths in the world.  Mosley and Hill describe the various methods and offer tips on using the most appropriate ones at the most effective times.  Some prayers are informal and conversational, others ask for specific results, and still others take place in a church or other institutional setting.  Mosley and Hill advise anyone who wants to pray more effectively and with greater satisfaction to try several approaches, depending on one’s attitude at the moment and on the particular situation.  For example, instead of pacing up and down at an airport waiting for the flight to depart, practice simple meditation techniques to instill peace and tranquility.  Mosley and Hill also examine how prayer is used in different religious traditions, including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism.  Most people may learn nothing new from this slim book, but especially those who have neglected the art of prayer will probably appreciate its support and encouragement.”

“This lovely gift book is a class act through and through, from the cover art (a set of angel tiles designed by William Morris) to the final prayer from the Leonine Sacramentary (“no enemy can rob us of our peace if our hearts are fixed on you”).  Mosley and Hill discuss prayer as a time of communion with God more than it is an opportunity to petition God for selfish desires. The prayers gathered here reflect that almost mystical perspective, and include Zoroastrian, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Native American, Jewish and Sikh traditions.  This is a thoughtful collection, guided by careful attention to textual and visual detail.”
