Book Signing Campaign for Writing from the Heart

Writing from the Heart is a collection of sixty-two essays written by young people from around the globe.  The contributors to the book are prizewinners of local Laws of Life essay contests—a unique character education program sponsored by individuals, local businesses, and community organizations all over the world. Last year over 60,000 young people participated in the contest and had the opportunity to write about their own “laws of life.”

To further promote the achievements of these young adults, Templeton Foundation Press, along with contest sponsors and several bookstores have teamed to launch book signings across the United States.  The first signing was held on April 7, 2001 at Le Muria Bookstore in Jackson, Mississippi, and co-sponsored by the Soli Deo Gloria Foundation.  Upcoming signings are scheduled for Easton, MD; Westport, CT; Cleveland, TN; Dayton, TN; Mankato, MN; Humble, TX; and Erie, PA.  Signings will also be held in Yonkers, NY, Oceanside, CA, and Naples, FL.

“The Laws of Life Essay Contest, first launched in 1987, encourages young people to identify and reflect on the principles they hope to live by, and to write about them. This compilation of recent submissions gives the lie to those who would say that modern youngsters are unreflective and bored by everything other than their own subcultures. Each of these essays is drawn from the writer’s experience: one recalls how her mother helped women and children in abuse shelters; another ponders the value of positive attitude; a nine-year-old gracefully points how sacrifice may sometimes be a necessary component of familial love. Some of these kids have had hard lessons. One girl describes the self-pity that trapped her after her mother succumbed to a brain tumor; another writes about her experience as a dwarf; a boy relates the cruelty of an abusive father; an African-American grieves over racist attitudes directed toward him at school. But in every instance these young writers are able to see the other side of their challenges with astonishing maturity and optimism.”

Story of a Clam Just Released

Story of a Clam: A Fable of Discovery and Enlightenment tells of egotistical Columbus Clam who has lived happily in his world, comfortable and uninterested in change—until he becomes aware of a much larger world.  In an exciting series of events, he becomes aware that “there is more to life than you presently know and experience.”  As Columbus slowly shifts from his selfish, unfocused life in the community to an awareness of a bigger world, a new and exotic element appears. A ‘still, small voice” becomes increasingly familiar and produces new information regarding the mysteries of the natural and spiritual worlds.

From this teaching tale, we realize that we are all faced with the limitations of our own minds and the narrowness of our cultural experiences.

Special Offer: Purchase Story of a Clam for $12.95 and receive a copy of The Humble Approach absolutely free plus $5.00 for shipping and handling. This is a combined price of $17.95. Refer to Code RN08.

Ten Scientists Consider Humility Theology

In God, Science and Humility: Ten Scientists Consider Humility Theology, ten leaders in their respective fields consider the relevance of their science to theological questions.  Contributors include Russell Stannard, whose field of research is high-energy nuclear physics.  Francisco J. Ayala presents his belief that the real hope of progress lies with research in the areas of ontogenetic decoding (the egg-to-adult transformation) and the mind-brain problem.

Physicist and theologian Robert John Russell reflects on the relationship between contemporary scientific cosmology and creation theology.  Other contributors include Herbert Benson, Owen Gingerich, Charles L. Harper, David B. Larson, Susan S. Larson, Patricia Meyers, David G. Myers, Giuseppe Del Re and Fraser Watts. Covered are such topics as the impact of spiritual value on patients’ health, the reflection of God in nature, human evolution, perspectives on the strengths and limitations of intuition, and how theology can enter into constructive dialogue with artificial intelligence.

Special Offer: Purchase a copy of God, Science and Humility for $19.95 and receive a copy of Spiritual Evolution for the half-price offer of $9.50 plus $5.00 shipping and handling. This is a combined price of $34.45. Refer to Code RN09.
