As emerging research demonstrates the effect of one's spiritual beliefs on a person's health and well-being, more information points to the necessity of performing a spiritual profile on a patient in addition to physical and lifestyle assessments. This month Templeton Foundation Press publishes Spirituality in Patient Care: Why, How, When, and What, by Dr. Harold G. Koenig, intended as a guide in this process for physicians, medical students, nurses, hospital chaplains, and administrators.
Spirituality in Patient Care outlines several significant questions about incorporating
spiritual beliefs into patient care: Why include spirituality in patient care?
How does a physician identify and address spiritual needs? When does a healthcare
provider take a spiritual history during the course of a medical evaluation?
What is the impact of physician involvement in this area? Are there ethical
boundaries that should not be crossed? Are there times when spiritual beliefs
can actually interfere with medical care in a harmful way? Physicians must
answer these questions clearly and unambiguously before deciding to take on
spiritual issues with their patients.
The book includes an extensive section of resources
for clinicians who would like to further explore spirituality and health,
including the tools necessary for taking a spiritual history inventory, summaries
of original research studies on spirituality and healing, reviews of major
academic texts and popular books on religion and health, and descriptions
of websites, newspapers, and magazines where physicians and other healthcare
professionals can go to obtain updated information about religion, spirituality,
and health. The book concludes with a detailed comprehensive listing of notes
and index.
Nearly two-thirds of medical schools in the United States offer courses on
religion, spirituality, and medicine. In practice, however, many physicians
feel uncomfortable addressing spiritual issues, don't know how or when to
do so, and can't imagine what the results would be if they did. Dr.
Koenig's new book provides an excellent primer for healthcare professionals,
opening the door to the introduction and inclusion of spirituality in patient
care.

There is a cadre of nurses today who are redefining traditional nursing by keeping alive its early Judeo-Christian roots: to care about and for the whole person. Their mission is to integrate attention to physical needs with consideration of emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual needs, presenting a new approach to healthcare as well as pastoral care, linking the spiritual and medical communities. They are parish nurses.
In Parish Nursing: Stories of Service and
Care, co-authors Verna Benner Carson and Harold G. Koenig describe
the work of parish nurses and the preparation needed to become a parish nurse.
Today's parish nurses serve a number of concurrent roles, including health
educator, health counselor, trainer of volunteers, organizer of support groups,
referral agent and liaison, integrator of faith and health, and health advocate.
In the hands of a parish nurse, simple tasks, like taking blood pressure,
can lead to a patient's opening up about concerns, fears, and needs. Then,
direction and help for these hidden needs can be offered.
Authors Carson and Koenig outline the step-by-step process for implementing
a parish nursing program. Here, as throughout the book, inspirational stories
from parish nurses illuminate and educate.
In addition to the testimonies of parish nurses, the book offers a look back at the history of the parish nursing movement and a glimpse forward toward the possibilities that lie within the next generation of parish nurses. An extensive series of appendices close the book providing a wealth of resources on parish nursing curricula, assessment tools, websites, books, organizations and contact information, and a sample healing service.
Today's healthcare system is struggling to keep pace with society's burgeoning
needs. Parish nursing is one way of expanding and supplementing the
over-burdened healthcare system. More importantly, it fills a crucial
gap by addressing emotional and spiritual needs alongside the physical.
Parish Nursing describes the tasks, and the preparation needed
for this work, thoroughly illustrated by stories of service and care by nurses
who have responded heroically and selflessly to the call.
Special Offer: Purchase a copy Parish Nursing and receive a free copy of Agape Love. A $5.50 shipping and handling cost will be applied to all domestic orders. Please add an additional $5.00 for international orders. Refer to Code RN21 when ordering.

Many Worlds: The New Universe, Extraterrestrial Life, and the Theological Implications
Edited by Steven Dick
In Many Worlds, thirteen renowned scientists--mostly (astro)(bio)physicists and astronomers (including the Astronomy Royal, the director of the Vatican observatory, and the director of SETI-Project Phoenix Search for Extraterrestrials Intelligence), along with a few (bio)chemists and philosophers--discuss the possibility of a 'cosmic' evolutionary process--what is referred to the as 'new universe'--and extraterrestrial life, and explore some of the philosophical and theological implications these might pose.
The aim is to initiate a dialogue and a relationship between religion and science and highlight a new 'cosmotheology.' Although the articles argue from different viewpoints, essentially the thrust of the book is that religion has to modify its concepts of God and adapt its theologies, if it is to survive recent scientific discoveries and developments; that is, it had to be well grounded in science (although the opposite view, that science should be well grounded in religion--for example, ethics or moral responsibility--is not much explored).
Many Worlds adds to the growing literature on religion and science and encourages dialogue between them, which-considering the rapid development of science and technology--is something that needs to be promoted and explored further. In this sense, the book is a useful starting point.-- Journal of Contemporary Religion, Vol. 17, No. 2, 2002

It is a book that is great for ages 11 through 14 for persons who like science and religion as well as dialogue and computers.--Albuquerque Journal, May 19, 2002
Words of Gratitude for Mind, Body, and Soul
By Robert A. Emmons and Joanna Hill
The words of gratitude found in this book comprise eight inspiring chapters, many trenchant quotes, and a suggested reading list. One of the suggested readings is entitled Gratefulness: The Heart of Prayer by David Steindl-Rast, who provides this book's introduction. In it ("Proverbs as Words of Gratitude"), he quotes this proverb: "When you drink from a stream, remember the stream." He also points out that some noble words of gratitude have originated with the unwashed, nameless, and homeless. "Better a bush than an open field," said someone seeking shelter. "The sun is a poor man's blanket," said another cold from the night.
I am pleased to recommend this book which sees the thankful life as a natural part of the scholarly life: "Thinking and thanking spring from the same root--in the realm of language as well as in the soul realm." It will provide a devotional uplift to all Christians who deal not only with things seen, but things unseen, for both of which they are grateful to God and to others.
Robert A. Emmons, the author of many research articles, book chapters, and a recent book, empirically explores how core aspects of identity reflected by spirituality relate to personality. Joanna Hill, a graduate student at the Theological School of the Academy of the New Church, is director of Templeton Foundation Press.--Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith, June, 2002
Wisdom from World Religions:
Pathways toward Heaven on Earth
By Sir John Templeton
Wisdom from World Religions: Pathways toward Heaven on Earth by Sir John Templeton is an impressive and memorable collection of anecdotes, meaningful teachings, insights, and much more thoughts of spiritual enlightenment drawn from religions and religious individuals worldwide, ranging from Christianity and Islam to Hinduism and Confucianism. One does not necessarily need to practice a religion or hold to a particular belief system in order to incorporate the fruits of this cornucopia of wisdom teachings into one's life. A broad, exhaustive, powerful compendium of tenants for self-improvement, morality, and love, Wisdom from World Religions is a most profound book and highly recommended for reading for students of religion, spirituality, ethics, and morality.--The Midwest Book Review, May, 2002
