New Book Documents the Unity Movement

Prayer meetings held in 1889 in the Kansas City, Missouri, living room of Charles and Myrtle Fillmore were the beginning of what grew to be an international religious and educational movement. The Unity Movement: Its Evolution and Spiritual Teachings offers the first in-depth study of the people, the beliefs, and the social influences that shaped it into one of the fastest growing churches of our time.

Author Neal Vahle documents the lives of the spiritual visionaries who created, organized, and led the movement such as Myrtle Fillmore, the 40-year-old wife and mother inspired by a Christian Science practitioner to cure herself of tuberculosis and Charles Fillmore, who planned a business career but found, through study, prayer, meditation, and dream analysis, that he had another calling. H. Emily Cady, a New York homeopathic physician whose book on Unity teachings, Lessons in Truth, was published in 1902 and has sold more than 1.6 million copies. Lowell Fillmore, eldest son of Charles and Myrtle clarified and popularized Unity teaching. Other descendants of Myrtle and Charles, each of whom made immeasurable contributions, are also documented.

Vahle proceeds to explore the key factors that led to the steady growth of the movement: the creation of the Unity School of Christianity; the development of the Unity Village in Missouri; the evolution of “Silent Unity;” and the development of centers and churches worldwide. He also presents and analyzes the controversies and debates within the organization.

As the Unity movement continues to expand both in the United States and abroad, Neal Vahle’s book is an animated yet impartial look at this fascinating major American religious movement.

Parish Nursing: Stories of Service and Care

Verna Benner Carson and Harold G. Koenig

This book is a must-read for any nurse contemplating parish nursing. And a more general audience may benefit, considering the great value parish nurses (PNs) provide at a time when health care is powered by technology, only partially effective, and a prohibitory expanse for many. Indeed, authors V.B. Carson and H.G. Koenig intend to educate health professionals, laity, and clergy about this approach to inexpensive, community-based, holistic health care.

Stories about the struggles and joys of parish nursing, the call to parish nursing, how PNs care for their communities, starting a PN program, and the future of parish nursing are supplemented by richly informative appendices. A quarter of the book is devoted to such practical information as curriculum content for PN training programs, samples of survey tools, and an example of a healing service. —Science and Spirit

If you are thinking of becoming a parish nurse or thinking of established a parish nurse in your parish or advising students who are seeking a career focus, this book will be of interest to you. The sub-title tells it well: Stories of Service and Care.

This is an absorbing assembly of recollections of established parish nurses. It begins with a) their decision to move from conventional hospital nursing into parish nursing, moves to b) their first experiences in that role, then to c) their reflections on their experiences with the church, and then to d) their experiences as they relate to the wider community beyond the parish. A subsequent chapter presents various models of parish nursing, continuing to use the words and experiences of nurses in the different styles. The final chapter offers a look to the future and the authors' hopes for this very young and fluid specialty.

The early chapters read almost like a religious tract as the authors and the nurses tell their stories of becoming parish nurses as testimony of their "call to ministry." The authors and the nurses who are telling their story testify to their "call." Apparently no one has asked whether becoming a nurse was itself a response to God's "call." Do not let such a question distract you from reading this book. The stories are important and certainly apply to all denominations.

These are rather new and important concepts in the field of nursing and in parish structure and function. As with any new idea there will be many changes with time and experience.—Catholic Studies

Spirituality in Patient Care: Why, How, When and What

Harold G. Koenig, M.D.

It is refreshing to read an excellent resource authored by a well-informed, well-read, committed, academician with ties to clinical medicine. Dr. Koenig's book is small enough to read in two sessions, and packed with enough information to whet the appetite of any clinician irrespective of spiritual persuasion.

This book represents an excellent summary and springboard for any person interested in the subject. In a matter of just a very few hours a wealth of information can be gleaned from the book and the resources listed and summarized will only peak the interest of the more interested. I highly recommend this book as reading for all physicians and would certainly recommend it as part of any course on medical ethics and/or required reading for any medical student.— Journal of the National Medical Association

Wisdom From World Religions: Pathways toward Heaven On Earth

Sir John Templeton

Particularly suited for young people, this book brings spiritual laws to life through stories and anecdotes. A selection of ancient and modern readings is offered from the teachings of Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Persian, Native American, Sikhism, Taoism, Zen, and Zoroastrianism. —SHOFAR

Having spent his life studying world religions and spiritual practices, Templeton has translated this mass of information into 200 “laws of life.” Arranged in weekly sessions of study, the book is specially organized to accommodate the school calendar as well as study groups and organizations. Templeton’s sources are extensive, including teachings from Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Native American, Jainism, ancient Persian texts, Confucianism, Taoism, Sikhism, Zen, and Zoroastrianism.  The material was selected for its ability to uplift the mind, provide answers to life’s most profound questions, and contribute to the growth of wisdom and a peaceful heart. At the end of each section, there are highlights from the week’s study material, suggestions for putting the laws into practice in daily life, and a place for personal notes. Reading through this book is a calming experience, a welcome break from stressful and agitated thinking. —NAPRA Review
