Unlimited Love – The Highest Form of Virtue

Unlimited love, or altruism, is love given with an unselfish regard for the welfare of others. Widely considered the highest form of virtue, unlimited love is often deemed a “Creative Presence” underlying and integral to all reality.

However, we know that love for all humanity is not innate. So, what then are its origins? And how can we contribute to its emergence? In Unlimited Love, Post presents an argument for the creation of a new interdisciplinary field for the study of love and unlimited love, “engaging great minds and hoping to shape the human future away from endless acrimony, hatred, and violence.”

Unlimited Love considers how our complex brains, unique imaginations, communicative abilities, reasoning powers, moral sense, and spiritual promptings give rise to altruism, compassion, and service.  This is a study of the “difficult, learned ascent that begins with insight into the need for tolerance and ubiquitous human imperfection, and matures into unselfish concern, gratitude and compassion.”  The focus is on the social scientific and evolutionary perspectives of altruistic motivation, with an analysis of these perspectives in a wide interdisciplinary context at the interface of science, ethics, and religion, thus creating the beginnings of the field of unlimited love research.

Research on Altruism and Love Offers Comprehensive Selection of Resources

Research on Altruism and Love: An Annotated Bibliography of Major Studies in Psychology, Sociology, Evolutionary Biology, and Theology presents interested readers and researchers a selection of available resources in the study of altruism.

A compendium of annotated bibliographies reviewing literature and research studies on the nature of love, Research on Altruism and Love is organized into four listings, each of which represents a distinct area of study in this emerging academic discipline. A section on religious love and its interaction with science presents both classical and contemporary literature related to the science-and-love issues or supporting literature for those issues from the perspective of religion. Listings on personality and altruism provide a broad overview of the literature concerning characteristics associated with altruism, such as, personality, gender, and socio-demographics. An area on evolutionary biology presents the most significant works on altruism and love in the field of evolutionary biology and evolutionary psychology. Finally, a section on the sociology of volunteer behavior focuses on the connections between helping behavior and religious organizations, including general voluntary associations.

The four editors of Research on Altruism and Love come from a diverse group of academic disciplines: Stephen G. Post, Ph.D. is president of the Institute for Research and Love and professor of biomedical ethics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio; Byron Johnson, Ph.D. is director of the Center for Research on Religion and Urban Civil Society at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia; Michael E. McCullough, Ph.D. is associate professor of psychology at the University of Miami; and Jeffrey P. Schloss, Ph.D. is associate professor of biology at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California.

A Spiritual Approach to Finances

Faithful Finances 101: From the Poverty of Fear and Greed to the Riches of Spiritual Investing, written by financial counselor Gary Moore, strips the veneer from the illusions of the evangelical views that have dominated much of the economic scene for the last two decades and presents an invaluable guide to creating a more abundant life.

Moore begins by calling attention to widely accepted economic teachings whose scriptural basis is questionable, if not totally misguided.  “Economic advice or speculation that is rooted in fear or greed stands in clear violation of the biblical ethic,” he states.  “And its negative effects—spiritual, political, and financial—should neither be underestimated nor taken lightly.” The virtual worship of money throughout much of the Christian world is not only tolerated, but also often inappropriately linked with mature and growing faith. “Such is the case with proponents of the so-called prosperity gospel, which essentially promises that those who are faithful have no choice but to be rich as well.”

Moore focuses on faith-based investing that is grounded in the recognition that all we have ultimately belongs to God.  “To be faithful in our finances, we must resolve consciously to use all of God’s wealth—100 percent of the time, talent, and treasure with which we have been entrusted—for the glory of God as well as for the benefit of others and ourselves.  This shift means having faith that if we’re doing what we are supposed to do today, God will take care of the future.”  To create wealth without destroying the soul in the process, Moore examines biblical passages from both Jewish and Christian Scriptures, pointing out counsel that is enriching both financially and spiritually.

Recent Reviews

Faithful Finances 101

From the Poverty of Fear and Greed to the Riches of Spiritual Investing

Gary Moore

“This book is hard-hitting, thought-provoking and intellectually challenging, offering a Christian view of macroeconomics rather than a mere how-to guide for personal finance.”

Publishers Weekly, June 2003

Faithful Finances 101 provides a timely reminder that wealth, in its many tangible, down-to-earth dimensions, springs from the deep pockets of God’s love.”

Christian Science Journal, July 2003

Unlimited Love

Altruism, Compassion, and Service

Stephen G. Post

“President of the Institute on Research for Unlimited Love and coeditor of Altruism and Altruistic Love: Science, Philosophy & Religion in Dialog, Post sets out to convince the public that it is well past time for the highest kind of love—that which possesses no boundaries or limitations and refuses to view the self as the only significant entity—to become the ultimate purpose of our lives. The Institute is attempting to examine scientifically the seven aspects of love—religious, ethical, ontological, physical, biological, psychological, and social—as set forth by Pitirim A. Sorokin in The Ways and Power of Love. . . . Post is thoroughly persuasive in his defense of this worthy project, for, in his words, ‘If we are to have a human future at all, it can only emerge from a love for humanity that transcends self, kin, and group to embrace all.’ Recommended for public and academic libraries.”

The Far-Future Universe

Eschatology from a Cosmic Perspective

Edited by George F. R. Ellis

“This scholarly work consists of 18 essays on eschatology, i.e., the far-off future of the universe. Although significant work has gone into studying the origin of the universe, far less time has been spent contemplating the fate of the universe tens or hundreds of billions of years from now. The essays in this fascinating book begin to fill that gap. . . . Although most essays are accessible to graduates or very advanced graduates in any field, a few require an advanced background in physics and mathematics. An excellent introduction and summary of current thoughts on the far-future fate of the universe for a graduate or research library.”

CHOICE, June 2003

Forgiveness and Reconciliation

Religion, Public Policy and Conflict Transformation

Raymond Helmick, S.J. and Rodney Petersen

“This book offers a star lineup and concrete perspectives from work in a number of regions, including South Africa, Mozambique, Southeast Europe, India, and Northern Ireland. A twenty-two page index of organizations addressing reconciliation and forgiveness gives readers many useful references for pursuing these issues further.”

The Journal of Religion, April 2003

The Unity Movement

Its Evolution and Spiritual Teachings

Neal Vahle

“Vahle offers the first sustained study of Unity, the metaphysical religious movement found by Myrtle and Charles Fillmore. . . . Always small numerically, Unity deserves critical analysis and appraisal. . . . For specialists interested in American religion and culture, new religious movements, and metaphysical religions. Recommended for upper-level undergraduates through faculty.”
