Inside the Mind of God: Images and Words of Inner Space, edited by Michael Reagan presents microscopic imagery of brain waves, nerve endings, cell structures, and acid crystals, viruses, cancers, and other diseases and disorders, revealing an awe-inspiring beauty. The striking photographs of “inner space” are juxtaposed with quotes from many scientists, writers, and philosophers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Cicero, Tolstoy, Galileo, and the Dalai Lama.
In her introduction, award-winning science writer Sharon Begley explores the theme of faith co-existing with science. She looks at the long-running debate over intelligent design, including the question of biological evil (cancer cells, for example) and the current search for evidence of the mind of God in the human brain (scientific measurements of meditation, for example). She remarks on the sense of the spiritual as well as simple awe that runs through science.
These images and the quotes that accompany them reflect, for many, natural theology’s use of “the wondrously complex machinery that constitutes living things to infer not merely the existence but even the attributes of the mind of God.” For others, the images may support Darwin’s tenet that nature has arisen by chance. And for others still, the images are a reminder that there is sacredness in nature itself. Drawing on Ursula Goodenough’s The Sacred Depths of Nature as she looks to the microphotographs that follow her introduction, she concludes: “Life is indeed a place of sacred depths.”

Previously published to high acclaim in Great Britain and now updated and available for the first time in a U.S. edition, Science and the Renewal of Belief sheds light on ways in which science and religion influence each other and can help each other. Author Russell Stannard is known for cutting through highly technical data and presenting it clearly and simply. In this book he lucidly explains quantum physics and relativity, using imaginative examples and ingenious analogies, along with an occasional touch of humor. He offers fresh insight into original sin, the trials experienced by Galileo, the problem of pain, the possibility of miracles, the evidence for the resurrection, the credibility of incarnation, and the power of steadfast prayer.
Evolution: The Disguised Friend of Faith? is a collection of thirteen essays by eminent priest-scientist Arthur Peacocke. Previously published in academic journals and literary anthologies, these essays provocatively expand the science and religion dialogue through reflections upon natural evolution, humanity evolving in the presence of God, and theological evolution—the re-shaping of belief.

John M. Templeton Jr. MD
“This is a wonderful little book, full of pity observations, illuminated with many illustrations, touching the heart as well as the purse strings. It points its readers in the direction of finding peace, happiness, and freedom by giving them to other people. The author practices what he advocates. In 1995 he retired from his medical practice to direct the activities of the John Templeton Foundation, and organization whose goal is to encourage the advancement of religious and scientific enterprises.”
